Logical Vs Physical.

We split the types of work we receive into two sections. Logical and Physical.

Logical.

This is a situation where a hard drive is mechanically sound but you are unable to access your data. Perhaps accidental deletion, format or a boot loop has occurred preventing access to your data.

Typical Causes include: Virus Attack, File Deletion, Bad/Corrupt Sectors, loss of file system/structure or Human Error.

Symptoms include: Slow access times, Blue screen of death, "drive not formatted" message, Missing partitions, computer freezing during use and Missing Files/Folders.

Physical.

Electrical & Circuitry

If your drive has suffered damage from the wrong power supply being used, power surges or power cuts we class this as electrical damage in the physical range.

Typical Causes include: Power cuts, wrong power supply used on an external drive and power surges.

Symptoms include: Drive not spinning, Burnt components and smoke.

Mechanical

This form of damage commonly occurs when a drive has received an impact. However over time a hard drive will degrade as parts wear out. Also, some components can just be faulty.

Typical Causes include: Media Degradation, Head Crashes/Pre-Amp Failure, Motor Failure and Environmental factors such as excess heat, water or vibration.

Symptoms include: Audible clicking/ticking noise, beeping noises or the drive not spinning at all.

(If your hard drive is clicking you should no longer try to power it on as you may cause further damage. In this case we recommend that you seek professional help as soon as possible)
